In a hard-fought physical battle which saw two yellow cards and a red, UAB's women's soccer team notched a crucial first-half goal and held off the University of Houston offense as the Cougars dropped their seventh 1-0 match of the 2003 season on Friday (Oct. 17) night in a rain-soaked Conference USA matchup at West Campus Field in Birmingham, Ala.
Houston has been shut out eight times this season, seven by 1-0.
On a corner kick, UAB's Jessica Samulski passed to junior Briana McCarty, who registered the score with a perfectly-timed header that found the right side of the net past Houston goalie Sarah Webster at 35:32.
UAB outshot the Cougars 13-1 on the night. With the win, the Blazers extended their winning streak to three-consecutive matches against Houston, and now own a 4-2 lead in the all-time series.
With the loss, Houston's record now rests at 3-11-1, including 1-6-0 in Conference USA. The Cougars travel on to Tampa, Fla., to take on the USF Bulls on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1:00p.m.
