Cougar volleyball spikes Saint Louis

HOUSTON, Texas - After dropping game one Friday afternoon to The Saint Louis Billikens, The University of Houston volleyball team rolled off three straight games to earn their first Conference USA win of the season 3-1.
Loure Dews' .458 hitting percentage and 15 kills set the tone for the Cougars who had three players finish with double digit kills. Kelly McAnelly finished with a game high 19 kills and Cinthia Piva knocked down 16 kills while setter Mirela Vasconcellos added seven kills and 53 assists. Dews also added three solo blocks and six block assists to help the Cougars earn the win in their C-USA home opener.
Saint Louis jumped out to an early lead taking game one 30-23. The Cougars could not get their offense going in the opening game, hitting just .048 in game one. After the opening game, Houston began to heat up taking game two 30-24 behind six kills from Piva and four kills by Dews.
In games three and four Houston jumped out to early leads and held on to close out the match 30-21, 30-23. McAnelly picked up 13 of her kills in the final two games of the match, keeping the Billikens from making a comeback.
McAnelly finished with 26 points for the match while Dews and Piva totaled 21 and 20 points respectively.
Saint Louis was led by Angela Powers 10 kills while Kayla Kmitta and Jessica Kmitta added nine kills each.
The Cougars will be in action again Saturday when they take on the Memphis Tigers at 7:30 p.m. at Hofheinz Pavilion.
