HOUSTON - University of Houston pitcher Brad Sullivan and center fielder Michael Bourn were named Preseason All-Americans on Friday by Baseball America magazine.
Sullivan was one of five pitchers named to the magazine's First Team, while Bourn joined two outfielders on the Second Team. Both players will begin their junior seasons at UH when the Cougars start on Feb. 7-9 at the Pepperdine Tournament in Malibu, Calif.
A year ago, Sullivan emerged as possibly the nation's finest collegiate pitcher. The Nederland, Texas, native compiled a 13-1 record with a UH single-season record 157 strikeouts and a miniscule 1.82 ERA.
He became the first player in both school and Conference USA history to be honored as a consensus All-American and has already been named to Preseason All-American First Teams by Collegiate Baseball magazine and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Bourn was equally impressive at the plate in 2002. The Houston native batted .327 with his first career home run against nationally-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette and 23 RBIs.
However, Bourn made his impact immediately felt on the basepaths where he swiped a team and C-USA-best 32 bases in 43 attempts.
He already ranks among the school's all-time career leaders with 67 stolen bases.
Both players played integral parts in helping lead the Cougars to a school-record-tying 48 wins and a berth in the NCAA Super Regional for the second time in the last three seasons during the 2002 season.
