Houston, Texas - After learning that starting quarterback Barrick Nealy will be lost for the season, the University of Houston football team returned to the practice field to take advantage of the an open week in their schedule.
"This will be an important time for us," Houston head coach Dana Dimel said. "While most coaches like to use an open week to get a team healthy, we are going to take a different approach.
"I want us to focus on improve on our fundamentals, especially in our special teams. I saw us getting more sound fundamentally today, so that is encouraging."
In addition, the Cougars will use the time to work with their new quarterback for the rest of the season, Nick Eddy.
"The team is fine," Dimel said. "We have to rally around Nick like we did when he was hurt in the preseason came when Barrick replaced him in the lineup after Nick suffered the hamstring injury."
Houston will return to Conference USA play on October 5 when the Cougars travel to Fort Worth, Texas and play TCU at 2:00 p.m. The Cougars return to John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium on October 19 when they play host to Army at 2:00 p.m.
