JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - The University of Houston golf team began its 2002 fall season Sunday with a 10th-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges.
UH rebounded during the final 18 holes on the 7,147-yard course at The Ridges Golf and Country Club to post a team score of 296 and finish the two-day event at 895, 19 strokes behind team champion Wake Forest.
There won't be any rest for the weary, though, as the Cougars begin competition at the Sooner Invitational on Monday morning. That tournament, scheduled for 54 holes, concludes on Tuesday.
Senior John Wine led the Cougars at the Tennessee tournament after shooting 6-over-par 222 to tie for 21st. Senior Simon Robinson, an All-Conference USA performer a year ago, recorded the Cougars' best round of the event with a 70 during Sunday's final round and tied with teammate Scott Ferguson for 27th place at 224.
Other Cougar golfers were Brett Callas (229, t-50th) and Kevin Newman (74th, 243), who made his collegiate debut last weekend.
North Carolina, TCU, Duke, South Carolina, host East Tennessee State, Tennessee, Auburn and Arkansas rounded out the top nine team leaders.
Five golfers claimed medalist honors after finishing the tournament at 1-under-par 215. Leif Olson (Duke), Ian Parnaby (Tennessee), Dustin Bray (North Carolina), Bill Haas (Wake Forest) and David Schultz (TCU) captured top honors.
The Cougars now head to Frisco, Texas, to compete in the Sooner Invitational at Stonebriar Country Club. UH will compete against a field, which includes BYU, New Mexico, host Oklahoma, Pepperdine, SMU, TCU, Texas and USC.
