As the days before the 2002 opening kickoff dwindle, the University of Houston Cougars are set for the final scrimmage tune-up before taking on Rice on August 31, at Rice Stadium.
The Cougars plan on scrimmaging at 7 pm tomorrow night at Robertson Stadium under "game-like" conditions, according to UH head coach Dana Dimel. This scrimmage as well as all practices are closed to the public.
In the grueling Houston heat the Cougars have spent the last two weeks practicing in preparation for the upcoming season. With two scrimmages and a slew of practices already in the books, Dimel is beginning to see all the pieces of his team coming together.
"We've been working on the mechanics on both sides of the ball," said Dimel. "Offensively, it takes continuous reps, reps and reps (repetitions) to get you ready and on rhythm. We've had more team reps this year than we've ever had in camp.
"Defensively, I like the way our team is playing right now. The run defense is coming on strong (with) the defensive line really impressing me right now."
As the Rice game quickly approaches, Dimel says his emphasis over the next week-and-a-half is to get his team ready to play an opposing team.
"Right now, we slowly start to look at our opponents that we're going to play, piece by piece looking at film and studying them. In a short period of time, we will start to work on game plans for our first couple of ball games, so now we can focus down on where we're looking at those first three opponents over the first few weeks."
After tomorrow's scrimmage the Cougars are slated for three straight days of two-a-days as camp wears down. Houston will have a day off on Sunday, as Monday, August 26, not only brings the first day of classes for the Cougars, but also the regular-season schedule for practices during the fall.
