Houston, Texas - Practice began yesterday for the 2002 Houston volleyball squad, who looks for its 21st consecutive winning season. Head coach Bill Walton (337-186) begins his 17th year at the helm and assistant coach Nikki Shade joins the team for a third year. The camp will consist of morning and afternoon practices and conditioning for the remainder of the month.
The squad is led by returning senior starters Jenny Tanneberger (6-0, MH), Donna Sellen (5-7, S), and Jane Anne Karasek (6-1, OH). Other key returnees include Loure Dews, Monica Prince, Cielisse Schroeder, and Mirela Vasconcellos.
The Cougars, who posted a 16-11 record last year, have four newcomers including junior college transfers Riana Knox and Ali Roberts, and Syracuse transfer Laura Koster.
"We have a lot of good players and a few outstanding players," Walton said. "They have to learn that the sum of their parts is greater than any other team's whole."
The squad opens their season on the road Aug. 30 against Centenary at the Lamar Classic in Beaumont, Texas. The Cougars will play their first home match Sept. 10 when they host Lamar at Hofheinz Pavilion.
