The University of Houston football team hit the practice field again this afternoon in continuing the fall camp preparation leading up to the 2002 season opener versus Rice on August 31.
The Cougars spent over two hours on the practice field behind the Athletics/Alumni Center, working on offense, defense and special teams. Even though he has tended to over-analyze his squad at times so far in preseason camp, UH head football coach Dana Dimel sees some definite progress with his team.
"I'm at a point where I'm critical of everything," said the third-year coach. "After going through what we went through last year, I am very critical (at this stage of camp.) We are taking nothing for granted and making sure I guard myself against those insecurities that are out there.
"The thing I am seeing, and I touched on this yesterday, is that the practice habits are so much better from the older players. Now, the thing I'm seeing is that some of the younger players don't have those practice habits. That's why I feel good about this year's team in that the seniors and the older players are leading by example, and these younger players will eventually follow these leaders and establish better practice habits."
Dimel also is pleased with the development of the special teams under first-year Special Teams Coordinator Joe Robinson.
"I really like the concept of having Joe be the special teams coach," added Dimel. "We know somebody is accountable for the special teams, and somebody that has done it and had a lot of experience with it. It really is his sole focus. I feel so much more comfortable with this than with someone who has to split time between positions and the special teams."
For the first time in camp the Cougars will get a taste of two-a-days, as UH practices both in the morning and the afternoon beginning tomorrow. The Cougars will continue with two-a-days until the first day of school, which is August 26.
