Olague Finishes Fourth In 10K At C-USA Championships

University of Houston junior distance runner Mike Olague recorded a fourth place finish in the men's 10,000-meter run at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Competing in his first 10K race of the season, Olague had a career-best time of 31:11.02. His time is 25 seconds better than his previous best, 31:35.36, which he set at the 2000 C-USA Outdoor Championships in New Orleans.
TCU's Herbert Mwangi was the individual champion as he set a new C-USA meet record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 29:43.67. DePaul's Chris Birchall finished in second place in 30:54.68 and South Florida's Russ Gerbers had a time of 30:58.74 to finish in third place.
Olague's fourth-place finish gives Houston five points in the team standings and the Cougars are tied with Louisville for seventh place through the first day. DePaul is early leader with 22 points, while Charlotte is second with 12 points. Mwangi's victory in the 10,000 meters gave TCU 10 points and the Horned Frogs are in third place after two events. Cincinnati is fourth with eight points, Marquette is fifth place with seven points and South Florida is in sixth place with six points.
In the men's decathlon, Houston's Adam Callahan scored 3,707 points and stands in second place heading through the first five events. Cincinnati's Chris Wineberg is the first-day leader with 3,735 points through the first five events.
South Florida's Tara Quinn was the women's 10,000-meter champion as she also set a new meet record with a time of 35:05.71. Defending champion Susan Barth of Marquette finished in second place with a time of 35:34.46. Marquette's Jackie Swan was third with a time of 36:12.24.
Houston's top runner in the women's race was Heather Howse, who finished in 14th place with a time of 39:02.35.
In the women's heptathlon, Houston's Krystal Ward is the overall leader through the first four events with 3,157 points. Cincinnati's Laura Valldepe was second with 2,993 points and Alexis McGaff of South Florida is third with 2,983 points. Houston's Briana Bassler is fourth with 2,967 points heading into the final three events on Friday.
Marquette is the women's team leader through the first day with 36 points. South Florida is in second place with 19 points and Memphis is third with six points.
