Cougar Softball Drop Series With Loss Second Loss to ECU

Houston, Texas - The Houston Cougar (25-17, 5-9) softball team lost the third game of the series to East Carolina (27-15, 9-6), on Sunday 12-2. East Carolina takes the conference series 2-1 with the win.
The ECU Pirates took an early one-run lead over the Cougars in the first inning. Angela Manzo singled, was bunted over by Kristen Johnson and knocked in by Kate Manuse. Ali McDougall, batting in the clean-up spot for Houston, evened the score with her third homerun of the year to centerfield. The score was tied at the top of three 1-1.
The Pirates Brandi Benedict shadowed the Cougars knocking their own solo homerun in the fourth. East Carolina opened up the game in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits. Bridger singled to begin the inning followed by a double by Kate Manuse. Herron reached base on a fielders choice scoring the run. Amber Gill singled and Brandi Benedict drove in the final two runs of the inning with her homerun to left field.
The Pirates closed the door on the game scoring another five runs in the sixth, making the score 12-1. The hitting was started for the second inning in a row, by Bridger and Manuse walked. Successive singles by Eva Herron and Stacey Smith brought in two runs and back-to-back doubles by Amber Gill and Brandi Benedict got the score in the inning to five.
Batting in the bottom of the sixth to prolong the game, Jeanie Davis put her first pitch over the outfield fence to score their second run of the game for the Cougars. The final score of the Sunday game 12-2 in six innings. The Cougars finished the game with four hits and two homeruns.
The winning pitcher for the Pirates was Nicole Bacon she improves to 15-9 on the year, helping the team to 27-15 for the season and 9-6 in Conference USA. Jamie Falco and Jenny Johnson split the pitching for the Cougars. Falco gets the loss on the day and is now 11-6 on the season.
The Cougars will be back in action April 10, 2002 against UT-San Antonio at 3:00pm for a double header.
