HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston pitcher Brad Sullivan and outfielder Brett Cooley swept the Conference USA weekly awards Monday with Sullivan being named Pitcher of the Week and Cooley earning Hitter of the Week honors.
In addition, Sullivan was one of four National Players of the Week as selected by Collegiate Baseball magazine.
It marked the second time this season that Sullivan earned both pitching awards from the league and Collegiate Baseball while Cooley received his first regular-season award.
Sullivan set a new school single-game record with 16 strikeouts in only 7.0 innings against Memphis in the first game of that series on Friday. He struck out at least two batters every inning and allowed only two balls struck by a Memphis bat out of the infield.
His record-setting numbers surpassed the mark he tied earlier this year against Tulane and set earlier by Kyle Crowell against UAB on March 31, 2000, and by Wayne Hill against Pershing on April 1, 1968.
In addition, he won his career-best sixth straight game to improve to 6-0, lowered his team- and league-leading ERA to its current 1.68 mark and raised his strikeout total to 91 in only 64.1 innings.
While Sullivan was dominating on the mound, Cooley was just as overwhelming to UH opponents at bat. In four games last week, he batted .706 (12-for-17) with five doubles, three home runs and nine RBIs. In addition, he compiled an amazing 1.529 slugging percentage, .750 on-base percentage and was errorless in 22 total chances at first base and in right field.
In game one of the series against Memphis, Cooley went 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI and followed that with three-hit performances on Saturday and Sunday.
He saw his batting average soar 51 points to its current .319 mark and stayed atop the team lead with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs. His home run total ties for the second most in C-USA.
Cooley, Sullivan and their Cougar teammates return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they face No. 3 Rice in the fifth and final game of the Silver Glove Series at Reckling Park.
