HOUSTON, Texas - For fans who want to see their University of Houston Baseball team in action, Tuesday night is their best chance in a while.
The Cougars, ranked No. 8 in the latest Baseball America poll, play host to McNeese State at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cougar Field. It will be the Cougars' first home game since taking a thrilling 12-11 win over LSU on Feb. 26 and their only home game in a 24-day span.
All Cougar games can be heard live on KGBC Radio 1540 AM and are also available on the Internet at www.kgbcradio.cc.
This will be the final non-conference game for the Cougars who open C-USA play at UAB with a three-game series, starting at 7 p.m. Friday and continuing through Sunday.
After sweeping No. 27 Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend on the road, the Cougars continued their ascent through the national rankings in all three national polls released Monday. In addition to their high standing in Baseball America, UH also ranked No. 12 in Collegiate Baseball and No. 13 in Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll.
Sophomore southpaw Austin Faught gets his first start of the year against the Cowboys. This season, the Houston native has compiled a 4.15 ERA with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings and will be looking for his first decision of the year against MSU.
Sophomore infielder Hyung Cho continued his hot hitting of late with a .385 batting average (5-for-13) with a run and two-run home run and extended his UH-season-best hitting streak to nine games against the Cajuns.
In addition, the Cougars exploded offensively with five home runs Sunday, nearly doubling their season total prior to that game. It was the most home runs in a single game by a Cougar squad since the 1999 team blasted a school-record seven homers at Cincinnati.
Junior Brett Cooley led the way with two bombs, including a grand slam, the first by a Cougar slugger in nearly two seasons. Jesse Crain and Cho also added home runs with Chris Snyder breaking an 8-8 tie in the top of the eighth inning with a monster shot over the left field wall at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
McNeese State comes into the game after taking two of three at Arkansas last weekend. Sophomore Seth Lastrapes is scheduled to start against the Cougars and has posted a 9.64 ERA with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Ran Prince leads the Cowboys with a .400 average and has tallied eight doubles and 11 RBIs. Tommy Eubanks tops the squad with six home runs and 22 RBIs.
