Cougars Finish Successful Weekend at Speedline Tournament

Plant City, Fla. - The Cougars finished their weekend on a very positive note at the Speedline Tournament on Sunday, winning in the semi-final rounds to BYU who was forced to forfit because of school rules. The Cougars advanced to the finals and were to play the winning of Stanford (#3) and Florida Atlantic (#13) that was set to start at 10:30am. The Cougars had to leave before the beginning of the final game due to flight limitations. The Cougars finish in third place out of the 24-team draw.
The Cougars won their last five games to reach this place in the tournament. They began the tournament with their only loss of the weekend to Florida International (3-2) and began their win streak that night with BYU (7-4). The Cougars won both games on Friday, beating Michigan State (4-3) and Georgia State (13-3). In the final game of the round robin portion of the tournament, the Cougars returned to International Softball Complex to shutout Maryland, 3-0.
The team finished pool play with a record of 4-1 and advanced with a first place seeding into single elimination play on Saturday at 7:00pm. The Cougars faced the University of Illinois-Chicago in what would become a homerun dual. The Cougars pulled out the win, 7-5 with Kristen Glowacz, Kim Cote and Ray Ferreris all earning homeruns.
"We played this weekend like we started our season at the Southwest Texas Tournament." Said Holas. "Things are really coming together with our offense, defense and pitching and we are still getting great off-the-bench contributions. We as a team have begun our upward climb towards our goals this season."
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, March 12, 2002 facing the Eagles of Southern Miss in the first home Conference-USA matchup of the year. The games will be played at 5:00* and 7:00pm* (*Time Change) and the third game of the series will be at 1:00pm* on Wednesday.
