The Lady Cougars Freeze Out The Utes of Utah.

Houston, Texas - In Houston's first game of the year at the newly completed Cougar Softball Complex, The Lady Cougars defeated the Utes 6-1 on an extremely cold afternoon. This was the first of two games too be played in the series.
Houston scored their first two runs in the bottom of the second when, Kim Cote, singled to right to get on base. Freshman, Kristen Glowacz, doubled to left field and Jeanie Davis reached on error to score the first run. Leslie Seay laid a soft slap past the pitcher to score the second.
In the fourth, Houston advanced their lead to four (4) with another single by Glowacz and a 2 run homerun by Jeanie Davis, first of the season for her, to make the score 4-0. The Utes countered in the fifth when Michelle Larsen scored on an error. Now making the score 4-1.
Arelis Ferreris slapped a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth to give the Lady Cougars a 5-1 lead. In her first official game, in her first official at bat, Kim Nesloney launched a home run, estimated about 225ft. to center field to increase the lead to 6-1. This would be the final hit of the game that ended in a victory for the Lady Cougars.
The Cougars finished today with six (6) runs on ten (10) hits. Pitcher Jenny Johnson earned her third win of the season throwing eight (8) strikeouts. For the season she has an ERA of 0.86 and twenty-three (23) strikeouts.
The Lady Cougars will be back in action tomorrow, Thursday Feb. 7, 2002, at 1:00pm for the second half of their series with the Utes.
