Houston, Texas - Houston tennis has made the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) rankings for the first time in at least three years, coming in at # 62 in the Top 75. The most outstanding win for the Cougars came on February 17, 2002 versus # 40 Tulane, the 2001 Conference USA Champions.
This past weekend Cougar tennis split two matches on the road loosing to #25 LSU by one game and defeating conference rival # 40 Tulane by one. Both games scores were 4-3. The Cougars are now 2-0 in Conference USA play and 5-2 on the season, already eclipsing their spring 2001 wins. In the past two weeks the Cougars have defeated one top 50 team (Tulane) and been barely defeated by two other top 30 programs by only one game. (#26 Alabama and #25 LSU)
The Houston team reached the rankings with the help of three undefeated players. Senior Sarah Borwell, ranked #8 nationally, plays in the #1 spot for the team in singles and has a record of 7-0. In addition to Borwell, another senior Jo Kenne also has a flawless record of 7-0 while playing in the #4 spot for the Cougars. Sarah Borwell and Jen Baccarani team-up for the Cougars #1 doubles and are also undefeated for the year (7-0).
