HOUSTON, Texas - More than 50 current and former University of Houston Cougar baseball players reunited Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field as part of the school's annual Alumni Day festivities.
In the nightcap, the 2002 Cougar squad overcame an early deficit and used some outstanding pitching to take an 8-2 win over an Alumni squad.
Earlier in the day, Mike Boaz, who lettered at UH from 1983 to 1984, blasted a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Red Alumni squad took a 5-3 decision over the White Alumni squad.
The 2002 UH squad recorded 12 hits, including six for extra bases, and six Cougar pitchers combined to hold their older brethren to only four hits and single runs in the first and ninth innings along with 14 strikeouts.
Gabe Lucas went 4-for-4 with two stolen bases and was only a home run short of hitting for the cycle, while Cole Bruce went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, double and three RBIs.
Hyung Cho also blasted two doubles, while Chris Snyder added a 2-for-4 effort with a run.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the 2002 Cougars regained the momentum as Lucas led off with a triple to left field. Cho then scored Lucas with a double to left center to tie the score at 1-all and Snyder's double gave the 2002 UH team the lead they would never relinquish.
The 2002 Cougars broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs off five hits. Bruce highlighted the rally with a two-out, two-run double.
Sunday's games were the first chances for fans to see the 2002 team in action at Cougar Field and were only the start of a busy week for UH. The team opens its 2002 home season at Cougar Field with a 7 p.m. game Wednesday against No. 25 Baylor. From there, No. 2 LSU comes into town for a three-game, non-conference series, starting at 7 p.m. Friday.
