HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team fell to Louisville 3-1 at Hofheinz Pavilion Friday night in an intense Conference USA match-up. The Cougars, who were outscored by the Cardinals 30-24, 24-30, 23-30 and 25-30, are now 16-8 overall and 6-3 in C-USA play.
Three-time 2002 Conference USA Player of the Week Jenny Tanneberger led all hitters with 25 kills (.308) and 17 digs. Tanneberger's performance against the Cardinals was her seventh double-double this season.
Laura Koster also had a double-double, adding 21 kills and 21 digs, while setter Donna Sellen added 47 assists, 18 digs and five kills. Seven Cougars tallied double-digit digs with Jaci Gonzalez and Mirela Vasconcellos adding 18 apiece and Ali Roberts contributing 16 to the defensive effort.
The Cougars prevailed in game one despite hitting only .186 as a squad. Louisville led for the better part of games two and three, dismantling the Cougar blocking game. The Cardinals hit .404 in game four behind Benny Flynn's seven kills to win the match 3-1.
Flynn and Anastasia Zaitseva led the Cardinals (20-4, 9-1 C-USA) with 19 kills each on the night. Libero Sarah Drury led the defense with 30 digs while Stacey Mercer added 19 digs and Jennifer Craven and Zaitseva each had 17 digs. Setter Craven totaled 54 assists on the night for Louisville.
The Cougars, who are behind in the all-time series against Louisville 10-4, have already earned their 2002 C-USA Tournament berth with four regular-season conference matches remaining.
Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion as Houston battles Cincinnati Sunday at 2 p.m.
