Volleyball Loses Tough Match to Arkansas

Orlando, Fla. - Despite double-double performances by seniors Jane Anne Karasek and Jenny Tanneberger, the University of Houston volleyball team lost a tough match to Arkansas 3-1 in the first day of the UCF Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Cougars (18-13, 7-7 C-USA) were outscored by the Lady Razorbacks in four games 30-23, 34-32, 28-30 and 30-22.
Jane Anne Karasek led all hitters with 22 kills and 12 digs. Jenny Tanneberger, a 2002 First-Team Conference USA selection and three-time 2002 Player of the Week, tallied 20 kills with no errors (.426) and 10 digs for her ninth double-double this season. Sophomore Loure Dews rounded off the Houston offense with 10 kills.
Senior Donna Sellen handled the Cougars' setting duties, totaling 60 assists, nine kills and seven digs. Freshman libero Jaci Gonzalez led the Cougar defense with 26 digs.
A total of five Lady Razorbacks tallied double-digit kills, as Sara Kincad totaled 16 kills and six blocks to for the team high. Anna Velikanova led the Arkansas defense with 20 digs and 12 kills while Roberta Tarnauskaite led the squad in assists (58) and posted 16 digs.
Arkansas (26-6, 14-2 SEC) outblocked Houston 17.0 to 5.0 and compiled only 17 hitting errors as a squad.
Houston, who ended C-USA play with a 3-1 second-round tournament loss to South Florida Nov. 23, will wrap up its 21st consecutive winning season against Kentucky. The Cougars will face the Wildcats (13-16, 6-10 SEC) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in their final regular season match of 2002.
