Houston Spikers Defeated by Charlotte in Four Games

Charlotte, N.C. - Despite another 20-kill performance by Jenny Tanneberger, the University of Houston volleyball team was defeated by Charlotte 3-1 at Halton Arena Friday night in a Conference USA match. The Cougars, who were by the outscored the 49ers 30-22, 30-26, 21-30 and 30-25, now have an overall record of 16-11 and are 6-6 in C-USA play.
Three-time 2002 C-USA Player of the Week Tanneberger led Houston with 20 kills (.260) and two digs. Laura Koster added 16 kills and six digs, while setter Donna Sellen added 45 assists and seven digs. Cougar libero Jaci Gonzalez led the defensive effort with 19 digs on the night. Jane Anne Karasek returned to the lineup after fracturing her arm Oct. 23 and added 12 kills.
Courtney Burg and Abbey Szlanfucht both hung 20 kills on the board for Charlotte (16-14, 6-6 C-USA) in the 49ers first-ever win over the Cougars. Burg also had 18 digs to earn her 18th double-double of 2002. The 49ers took a 1-0 lead in the match after picking up a 30-22 win in game one. They were in a position to make it a sweep with a 30-26 win in game two, but the Cougars answered with a 30-21 in the third game. In game four, Charlotte took the lead early, then held off a late Houston rally to win 30-25 and clinch the match.
The Cougars will travel to Greenville, N.C., Saturday to face East Carolina (6-24, 0-11 C-USA) at 6 p.m. in their last regular-season conference match of 2002. Houston will compete in the first round of the 2002 Healthy Choice C-USA Volleyball Tournament to be held Nov. 22-25 in Chicago.
The annual C-USA banquet will be held in Chicago Nov. 21 prior to the start of the tournament. Tanneberger, Gonzalez and Sellen have been nominated for all-conference awards this season, including All-C-USA, Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Setter of the Year.
