CHICAGO - The University of Houston volleyball team defeated DePaul 3-1 in Chicago Friday night in a Conference USA match-up. The Cougars, who outscored the Blue Demons 30-17, 30-21, 23-30 and 30-28, improved their overall record to 15-7 and 5-2 in C-USA play.
Two-time 2002 Conference USA Player of the Week Jenny Tanneberger led all hitters with 23 kills (.382) and 10 digs. Laura Koster was just one dig short of a double-double, adding 19 kills and nine digs, while setter Donna Sellen added 40 assists,10 kills and eight digs. Cougar libero Jaci Gonzalez also contributed 11 digs to the defensive effort.
The Cougars, who lead the all-time series 6-3, outblocked DePaul 9.0 to 4.0 and forced 11 Blue Demon reception errors. Kate Engel led DePaul (5-21, 1-8 C-USA) with a double-double, posting 21 kills and 16 digs on the night.
Houston surprised DePaul in game one, forcing the Blue Demons to hit -.027 and winning by 17 points. DePaul came out strong after halftime and upended the tired Houston squad, 23-30 in game three, only to lose a close game four 30-28.
The Cougars will travel to Milwaukee Saturday to battle Marquette at 7 p.m. Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion as Houston battles Louisville on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
