With the annual Conference USA tournament just a week away, the University of Houston women's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 victory over the Memphis Tigers on Sunday (Oct. 27) afternoon in the pivotal league match at Echles Field in Memphis, Tenn.
After a scoreless tie at the half, both teams came out of the locker room and endured a defensive battle until the 83rd minute of play.
With just over six minutes remaining in regulation, Houston sophomore Nikki Hawkins increased her team-leading goal total to six on the year when she slipped her second shot-on-goal of the day past Memphis goalie Katarina Wicksell to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.
The goal also pushed Hawkins' team-leading point total to 12 overall on the year.
The Tigers out-shot the Cougars, 12-9, on the afternoon, but Houston recorded three shots on goal compared to Memphis' two.
With the win, Houston evens its overall season record to 7-7-2, including 3-3-2 in Conference USA play. The Cougars wrap up the regular season in the home finale against C-USA opponent TCU on Friday, November 1, with kick-off slated for 1:00 p.m.
