HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston Athletic Department announced Wednesday that it had reached an agreement with KGBC Radio AM 1540 to broadcast 54 regular-season games of the upcoming Houston Cougars baseball season.
The station will also cover all UH games at the Conference USA Tournament and throughout the entire NCAA postseason.
C.B. Devoy will provide play-by-play, while Leon Blum adds color analysis to the games.
"This takes our station to the next level of being a force in the Houston sports market," Blum said. "Having a college tie-in locally is a tremendous force for us."
The Cougar baseball squad, ranked 27th nationally by Baseball America magazine, starts its 2002 season during the Astros College Classic at Enron Field with a 4 p.m. contest against Baylor on Feb. 8. The tournament continues through the weekend, with a 7:30 p.m. game against Texas on Feb. 9 and a 12:30 p.m. showdown against Texas A&M on Feb. 10.
"This radio deal is another example of the level of baseball played here at the University of Houston," said Associate Athletics Director for Communications Chris Burkhalter. "Coach Noble has taken this program from average to top 25 and this rise warrants a radio package. KGBC has done outstanding job in broadcasting our women's basketball games this season, and it's only natural that they do the same with our top 25 baseball program."
KGBC is Houston's newest sports authority and serves as an affiliation for national stations such as ABC News, TSN News, ESPN Radio, Texas Ranger's Baseball, Texas and Texas Tech Football, Westward One Radio Network and the Performance Racing Network (PRONE).
KGBC currently broadcasts a wide range of athletic events and games from college to the pros, including the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBA and NASCAR as well as Houston area high school and college action.
