HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston baseball program was ranked 27th nationally by Baseball America magazine recently in its college preview issue.
Several Cougars - including catcher Chris Snyder, outfielder Michael Bourn, infielder Hyung Cho and pitcher Brad Sullivan - were also prominently mentioned among the top Conference USA leaders.
UH opens its 2002 season on Friday, Feb. 8, when it faces Baylor in a 4 p.m. game at the Astros College Classic at Enron Field.
The editors of Baseball America magazine picked the Cougars to finish second in 2002, exactly where the C-USA coaches picked the team in the league's annual preseason poll.
In addition, the Cougars were predicted to receive one of the league's three bids to an NCAA Regional, joining Tulane and 2002 C-USA newcomer East Carolina.
Snyder, Cho, Bourn and Sullivan were each named to the magazine's Preseason All-Conference USA team.
In addition, Snyder collected honors as Best Raw Power and Catcher/Best Arm and was recognized as the league's No. 2 prospect in the June 2002 draft.
Sullivan, a 2001 All-C-USA honoree as a true freshman, received the Best Breaking Ball and Best Control awards from the magazine's editors and was projected as the league's No. 3 prospect in the 2003 draft.
Cho, who was listed as the league's No. 5 prospect in the 2003 draft, was named Best Defensive Third Baseman, while Bourn was listed as the league's Fastest Baserunner.
