Cougar Tennis Team Begins Season With Two Big Wins

Houston, Texas - The Cougar tennis team began their season at the John E. Hoff Varsity Courts on Saturday, challenging Southwest Texas State and the University of Texas Pan American. The Cougars cam up with two big wins beating Southwest Texas 5-2 and taking every match from Pan Am.
Sarah Borwell, ranked #8 in the nation, defeated Melanie Hall of SWT 6-1, 6-2 and Celine Merlini of UTPA 6-2, 6-1. Analia Longoni a, a new addition to the team since the Christmas break also won both of her matches of the day beating Tina Klemenc of SWT and Elizabeth Mateos of UTPA. Jen Baccarani also won both of her matches on Saturday defeating Jovanna Dimovic of SWT 7-5, 6-1 and Katherine Watson of UTPA 6-1, 6-1. Jo Kenne won both of her matches in the #4 slot for the Cougars as she defeated both Mackensie Mekus of SWT and Eve Nickelson of UTPA (6-4, 6-4 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively). Kailey Meisinger and Kandace Ridgeway both had wins for the Cougars also. Meisinger defeated Ana Pena of UTPA 7-5, 6-1 and Ridgeway defeated Jessica Brown also of UTPA 1-6, 6-4, 11-9.
In doubles for the day Sarah Borwell and Jen Baccarani teamed to defeat both Hall and Klemenc of SWT and Merlini and Mateos of UTPA (both by scores of 8-1). Jo Keene and Analia Longoni defeated Dimovic and Schneider of SWT 8-3 and Waslon and Nickleson of UTPA. Kailey Meisinger and Kandace Ridgeway also took a win in doubles defeating Pena and Brown of UTPA 8-4.
The tennis team is back in action this coming Saturday Feb. 2 at home against UT- San Antonio at 10am.
