After being fouled, sophomore Chandi Jones nailed both of her free throw attempts to give Houston a 61-58 lead with 11 seconds left, and despite East Carolina's Renee Cosby nailing a two-point jumper with less than a second remaining, the University of Houston Lady Cougars held on as they squeaked by the Pirates by a final of 61-60 at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C. on Friday (Jan. 25) night.
Down by one point (57-58) with just eleven seconds remaining in the game, Jones nailed a two-point jumper to give Houston a 59-58 lead before being fouled.
Houston entered half-time with a 36-38 lead before East Carolina would pick and comeback in the second half. Down 37-50 with 12:48 left, the Pirates shut down the Lady Cougar offense and put together a 13-0 run, capped off by tying the game at 50 apiece when Shanita Sutton hit the second of two free throws with 6:51 remaining.
Freshman Kiki Harris gave Houston a brief two-point lead (52-50) with a lay-up, but the game continued to go back-and-forth until the closing seconds.
Jones finished the night shooting 10-of-18 for a game-high 25 points, and she added two steals. Senior post player Valerie Muoneke pulled down a game-high 11 boards, the fourth time this season she has registered double digits in rebounds.
The win was the Lady Cougars' fourth in a row, tying their season high, as well as their third straight over a Conference USA opponent. Houston's record improves to 13-5 overall on the year, and the now rest at 3-2 in C-USA action.
Houston travels to Charlotte, N.C., to take on the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday, Jan. 27, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (ET).
