Houston, Texas - University of Houston outside hitter Jennifer Wittenburg added to her trophy case Monday when she was named Conference USA Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 23.
In three matches last week, the Houston native tallied 86 kills and 35 digs to help lead the Cougars to a 2-1 record, including back-to-back wins over Tulane and Memphis to open the conference season.
Included in those numbers are 31-kill performances against nationally-ranked Texas A&M and at Memphis on Sunday in the Cougars' Conference USA road opener. Those matches marked the sixth and seventh 30-kill performances of her Houston career.
This season, Wittenburg leads the team with 248 kills and 155 digs. She recently surpassed the 1,000-kill mark after her effort at Memphis and needs only 130 more kills this season to break into the top five in school career history.
It is the third time she has been honored with the Conference USA Player of the Week award.
Wittenburg and her Cougar teammates will enjoy a few days off from the court before hitting the road again to meet league rival Cincinnati at 7 p.m. Friday. From there, UH wraps up its road swing with a 2 p.m. showdown Sunday at Louisville.
