2001 COUGAR FOOTBALL
HOUSTON COUGARS VS. TCU HORNED FROGS
Game 3 - September 29, 2001 - 7 p.m. (CDT)
Houston, Texas - John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium (40,000)
The Coaches -
Dana Dimel heads into his second season as the head coach of the University of Houston program. In a year of adjustment in 2000, Dimel posted a 3-8 record with his young Cougars. Dimel arrived in Houston after three years as the head football coach at Wyoming, where he posted a 23-12 mark and was one of only 10 current Division I-A head coaches to have won at least seven games in those three years. Dimel spent almost 10 seasons at his alma mater, Kansas State, as he had a hand in developing the Wildcat program into one of the more dominant teams of the past decade.
TCU's Gary Patterson begins his first full season as the head coach of the Horned Frog program after taking over for Dennis Franchione before the GMAC Moblie Ala-bama Bowl last season. Patterson served as Franchione's Defensive Coordinator for three seasons before his rise to the head-coaching position. A long time assistant coach, Patterson has made stops at Tennessee Tech, Cal-Davis, Cal Lutheran, Pittsburg (Kan.) State, Sonoma State, Utah State, Navy and New Mexico.
Series Notes -
After a six-year hiatus the Cougars and Horned Frogs face one another on the gridiron for the first time since the final season of the SWC in 1995. TCU has won three straight in the series, including a win in Houston in 1994. The series began when the Cougars joined the SWC in 1976, and UH promptly won the first eight meetings. The Horned Frogs captured their first win in 1984, and in the late 80's/early 90's the two teams locked horns in several offensive exhibitions.
