The University of Houston volleyball team was defeated by Stephen F. Austin in its opening match of the 2001 season, falling by a score of three-games-to-two at the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational across town at Autry Court. Houston must now come back and face No. 18 ranked Texas A&M in an evening match at the five team, round-robin tournament.
The Cougars out-hit, out-dug and out-scored SFA for the match, but costly errors allowed the Ladyjacks to claim a 17-30, 34-32, 31-29, 18-30, 15-11 win in the season-opener for both teams. Houston was paced by senior Jennifer Wittenburg's 29 kills, 20 defensive digs and three service aces while sophomore Amanda Baggett, playing in her first action since the opening week of 1999 posted an eye-opening 26 kills, 21 digs and .417 hitting percentage.
In the new rally-scoring format however, Houston errors led to 52 of SFA's 115 points. The Ladyjacks converted the UH miscues into key wins in games two and three.
Houston meets Texas A&M at 5:00 p.m. Friday evening.
