Two-a-Days End For Cougars

With the first day of classes set to begin tomorrow, the University of Houston wrapped up its annual fall two-a-days this afternoon with a rigorous morning workout and a light walk-through this afternoon.
The Cougars have spent the last two-and-a-half weeks practicing twice a day in the hot Texas sun, and according to UH head coach Dana Dimel, everything is "coming together" for his 2001 squad.
"Tomorrow is always a big transition day," said Dimel, "as they start to get into the school work. Traditionally, they always do poor tomorrow as far as their workouts go. They just aren't focused with their concentration on the first day of classes.
"They'll start to realize that they are in class, and the games are right around the corner. What we're going to do here for the next four days is put guys in game-like situations and game settings as much as we possibly can."
Dimel is pleased the Cougars picked up right where they left off last spring and have completed a very productive fall practice. With the regular-season practice regimen right around the corner beginning tomorrow afternoon, Dimel feels his team is starting to take shape.
"I thought we started (camp) right where we left off this past spring," added Dimel. "We threw the entire offense in, and by the first Tuesday scrimmage we had the entire offense in place. What that has allowed us to do is evaluate where we are at this point.
"I feel we are ahead of the game, but we want to stay ahead of the game. Instead of cutting back, we are going to try to get that much better over the next couple of weeks. That is the reason we are going to do some more game-like situations."
The Cougars will hold their third and final scrimmage of the preseason this Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. at Robertson Stadium. UH opens up the 2001 season by playing host to Rice University in the annual Southwestern Bell Bayou Bucket clash. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 1.
