Houston, TX - The University of Houston baseball team slugged a season-high 18 hits to claim a 10-3 Conference USA win over visiting Saint Louis Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field. With the victory Houston completed a sweep of the Billikens in the three-game C-USA weekend series and remained in a tie for first place in the conference standings with a 19-5 league record.
The Cougar offense gave UH true freshman pitcher starting Gene Flores a lot of run support in the early going. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Houston exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third on six hits, a hit batter and two perfectly placed sacrifice bunts.
Saint Louis cut the margin to 7-3 with single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings, but Houston scored three big runs in the bottom of the eighth on the way to the 10-3 final. UH's freshman trio of Michael Bourn, Hyung Cho and Thanos Papavasiliou all collected three hits on the day while one of Jared Grein's two hits was a his first career homer that scored a pair of runs in the eighth. Cho completed the three-game series with eight hits in 13 at bats, including three doubles, seven runs scored and six RBI.
Houston also had another solid showing from Flores an the pitching staff. The right-hander from Corpus Christi, Texas, allowed two earned runs on five scattered hits and two walks in 6.0 innings of work. He struck out four to record his fourth win of the season. Senior Nick Torina pitched a scoreless inning in his final home appearance at Cougar Field. Junior Nathan Mitchell pitched the final two innings and struck out the side to end the game. The Billikens managed only four earned runs off UH pitching all weekend.
Houston improved to 28-23 overall and 19-5 in C-USA action. Saint Louis fell to 20-30 on the year and 8-16 in conference. The Cougars will next face crosstown rival Rice on Wednesday, May 9, in the final installment of the 2001 Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series. First pitch from the Owls' Reckling Park will be at 7:00 p.m.
