Houston -- University of Texas-Arlington second baseman Craig Martin slugged a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 6-6 tie and lift the Mavericks past Houston in a morning elimination game on the second day of the NCAA Tournament at Reckling Park on the campus of Rice University. With the defeat UH is eliminated from the postseason tournament and closes out its 2001 season with a 29-30 overall record.
After UTA took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning the Cougars answered with four in the top of the fourth on four hits, highlighted by a grand slam home run by junior Chris Klosterman. The Mavericks however rallied for a run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 4-3. Texas-Arlington then took a 5-4 lead with two more runs in the fifth before adding yet another run in the sixth.
Houston scored a run on Gabe Lucas' sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it 6-5. In the eighth UH tied the game, 6-6, with a solo home run by Chris Snyder - his team-leading 13th of the year. The Cougars put two more men on base later in the eighth and then two more on base again in the ninth, but failed to convert the opportunities to runs.
UH retired the first batter to open the ninth but Martin connected for a home run to left field to end the game 7-6. The Mavericks (39-24) advance to play the winner of the Rice-Baylor game at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.
