New Orleans, LA -- University of Southern Mississippi starting pitcher Chad Rogers scattered four hits, walked only one and struck out seven in leading the Golden Eagles to a 6-2 win over the University of Houston baseball team in the opening game of the Federal Express Conference USA Tournament Wednesday morning in New Orleans, La.
With the loss the Cougars move into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament and will next face either South Florida or Louisville at 9:00 a.m. Thursday at Zephyer Field.
Rogers held UH in check even when his defense behind him struggled early in the game. With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth Southern Miss committed three fielding errors in one inning and ended with five in the game. The Cougars however could not convert the miscues to runs but were still in the contest late in the game.
After a two-out double by Michael Bourn made the score 3-2 with runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, Rogers was relieved by Anthony Rawson who ended the threat with a ground ball out. The Golden Eagles used the momentum added two more runs in the top half of the eighth and one more run in the ninth for a 6-2 final.
Houston fell to 29-27 on the year while Southern Miss improved to 26-30. USM will next play the winner of South Florida and Louisville at 12 Noon Thursday. The Cougars' morning game will be broadcast live around the world on the internet at www.tsrnsports.com.
