TAMPA -- Houston used a seven-run fourth inning to move past South Florida 12-2 Sunday afternoon at Red McEwen Field in the regular-season finale for both clubs.
USF will be the No. 3 seed at the Conference USA Tournament and face Louisville, the No. 6 seed, at Zephyr Field in suburban New Orleans, Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CDT. Houston, the No. 2 seed, will face Southern Miss, the No. 7 seed, at 9 a.m. Other first-round pairings include top-seeded Tulane against Charlotte, the No. 8 seed at 7 p.m., and Cincinnati, the No. 4 seed, against Memphis, the No. 5 seed.
The Cougars (29-26, 20-7) took advantage of three USF errors in the first inning to score three runs and cruised the rest of the way. The game was called after seven innings.
USF (28-27, 16-11) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings. Bill Nahorodny, 4-for-6 in the series, doubled for the third time in the three games into right-center field with one out in the third. He scored when Mike Macaluso singled up the middle to cut the early deficit to 4-1.
Houston used seven hits, including doubles from Chris Snyder and Sean Allen, to score seven in the fourth and build an 11-1 lead.
"We played terrible," said USF coach Eddie Cardieri. "We threw the ball to the wrong base a 100 times and didn't execute to defend the first and third situations. It was like a totally different club from the last few days and more reminiscent of some of the innings that we had earlier in the year. This was nothing like how we have been playing lately."
The Bulls scored an unearned run in the fourth when Mike Eylward singled down the left-field line, moved to second via a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by third baseman Hyong Cho.
USF starter Jon Uhl (4-4) took the loss. He allowed nine runs (six earned) on six hits in three innings. He walked a pair (both scored) and struck out one.
The winner was Gene Flores (5-4). Flores limited the Bulls to seven hits, including six singles, in the complete-game effort. Just one of the runs was earned and he struck out a pair while walking no one.
