LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
The University of Louisville baseball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third inning and then hung on for a 4-2 Conference USA win over the visiting Houston Cougars Sunday afternoon in Kentucky. With its second defeat in as many games UH fell to 25-23 overall and 16-5 in C-USA action.
Louisville struck for an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning when Fernando Isa drew a two-out walk and then scored on a single by Matt Jarboe that got away from right fielder Keith Whatley and rolled into the corner.
Houston answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third to take the lead 2-1. Gabe Lucas singled with the bases loaded to score Hyung Cho and Chris Snyder. It was one of only five Cougar hits on the day and 10 hits for both teams. Louisville also had five hits but took advantage of two UH fielding errors.
The second Cougar error of the day was in the bottom of the third that sparked the Cards to the big three-run inning. With one away and runners on first and second, Morgan Bojorquez hit a ground ball to shortstop that hadcuffed Keith Ahrens. Instead of converting for two outs or even getting out of the inning with a possible double play, Louisville now had the bases loaded. The next batter, Mark Jurich slugged a double that scored two. A ground out by Dave Williams Jr. then scored one more run to make the score 4-2.
The Cougars had runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but UL relievers Chase Cruse and Josh Ring managed to preserve Louisville's second win of the three game series. Louisville improved to 27-23 overall and 10-11 in C-USA. Houston will next face league rival Saint Louis in a three-game C-USA weekend series on Friday, May 4.
