CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning to key a 12-5 win over Houston Friday night at Johnny Bench Field in Ohio. The defeat snapped the Cougars' win-streak at eight games and gave UH its first loss of the season in Conference USA play.
Five Cincinnati singles and a walk helped the Bearcats jump out to a 5-0 lead off true freshman starter Brad Sullivan. Cincinnati then extended the margin to 8-0 with three more runs in the bottom of the third. UC starting pitcher Joey List meanwhile was solid in pitching a complete game win, allowing seven hits, walking only one and hitting another to improve to 3-3 on the year.
Houston slugged a season-high four home runs on the night, led by sophomore catcher Chris Snyder's two for his 9th and 10th of the year. Freshman Sam Mitchell hit his third home run while Gabe Lucas hit the first of his career, but only Synder's final shot was with men on base. The Cougars struggled to get base runners. Aside from the four home runs UH also hit a total of 14 fly balls to the outfield that were easily fielded for outs by Cincinnati.
The Cougars fell to 14-17 overall and 6-1 in C-USA. The Bearcats improved to 16-9 and 3-4 against the league. Game two of the three-game weekend series will be cybercast live around the world on the internet at www.ucbearcats.com. First pitch Saturday is slated for 1:00 p.m.
