Houston to Host Tom Tellez Invitational On March 31

In addition to Houston's men's and women's squads, the meet will feature men's and women's track and field teams from Baylor, Illinois, LSU, Texas A&M, along with the men's track and field team from Texas.

Senior Jeff Mueller and sophomores Robert Foster and Lauren Smith led Houston's strong showing at the Texas Southern Relays on March 23-24. Mueller won the men's high jump and Foster won the men's 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 10.39 seconds.
Smith provisionally qualified for the NCAA Women's Track and Field Championships when she won the 100-meter hurdles in a career-best 13.56 seconds. She edged her teammate Magenta Taylor, who finished second in 13.64 seconds and Shelley Keys was fourth with a time of 13.97 seconds.
Jackie Rzepecki won the women's 1500-meter run in a time of 4:35.70 and Aisha Morgan finished second in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.87 seconds. Brandy Stewart also was third in the 100-meters with a time of 11.89 seconds.
Jessica Edwards won the women's pole vault with a mark of 11-1.75 and Kim Stallman was third with a vault of 11-1.75. Serina McFarland was second with a discus throw of 136-6.
In addition, Houston claimed women's 4x100-meter relay (45.91) and 4x400-meter relay (3:48.10) titles.
Toartou Kargou won the men's 1500-meter title with a time of 4:02.50 as he edged teammate Mike Olague, who finished second in a time of 4:02.98.
Defending Conference USA champion Greg Christie also made his outdoor debut in the 400-meter hurdles with a second place finish in a time of 52.12 seconds.
Adam Callahan finished second in the high jump behind Mueller with a leap of 6-10.75 and was fourth in the pole vault with a time of 14-7.25.
Brandon Bray was second in the men's long jump with a leap of 23-1.75 and Billy Leavings was second in the men's pole vault with a mark of 15-1.
Houston also claimed the men's 4x100-meter relay (40.79) and distance medley relay (10:24.05) championships.
Clarke Opens Outdoor Season
Junior All-American Rhian Clarke will compete for the first time during the 2001 outdoor season at the Tom Tellez Invitational after missing last week due to illness.
Clarke finished fourth in the pole vault at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships to earn All-American honors for the second straight year when she recorded a career-best mark of 13-9.25.
She also was an All-American last year after finishing seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 13-1.50 at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
