Cougars Begin Conference USA Schedule 1-1
HOUSTON, -- The University of Houston softball team began its Conference USA schedule on Saturday afternoon beating Louisville 5-4 in game one, and losing to the Cardinals 0-4 in the second game of the doubleheader. Houston is now 1-1 in conference action and 12-20 overall.
In game one, both teams remained scoreless after two innings until the Cougars rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third for starting pitcher Jamie Falco and then exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead. Louisville would fight back in the final innings of the game scoring one run in the top of the fifth, two runs in the top of the sixth, and another run in the top of the seventh before Falco struck out Cardinal shortstop Val Smith to end the game. Falco, who recorded her sixth career win, allowed seven hits, two walks, and struck out five. Offensively, Houston was lead by junior second baseman Leslie Seay whose single in the bottom of the third scored Houston's first run of the game. Seay finished the first game 2-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman centerfielder Candice Turnbo was also a force for the Cougars as she amassed three hits and one RBI on the day.
In the second game, it was Louisville who jumped out to an early lead after Houston's freshman starter Jenny Johnson surrendered a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the third inning. UL would add two more runs in the top of the seventh to make the final score 4-0. UH was unable to find and offensive rhythm during the game, scattering just four hits and leaving six Cougars on base.
Houston will complete its weekend series with the Cardinals on Sunday, March 25. First pitch with the Cardinals is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
