Houston, TX -- The No. 25 ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team got a complete game performance from starting pitcher Jon Smith to post a 5-2 win over the University of Houston Friday night at Cougar Field. Houston's sixth-straight loss, the last five of which have been to nationally-ranked teams, dropped UH's overall record to 6-14.
Cal State Fullerton scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on just one hit off starter Brad Sullivan. The Cougars answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Josh Snook scored on a double by Chris Klosterman. In the third Fullerton manufactured a run after third baseman Shawn Norris drew a walk, advanced on a sacrifice hit and scored on a single.
That run made the score 3-1 and was all the room Smith would need from the mound. The senior lefthander scattered nine hits, did not allow a walk and struck out four in pitching a complete game victory. Smith moved to a perfect 4-0 on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.29.
Houston's final run was scored in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Thanos Papavasiliou doubled with two away and scored on a single by senior Sean Allen. UH had its share of runners but stranded a total of seven men in the game. The Cougars fell to 6-14 overall while Cal State Fullerton improved to 9-8. Game two of the three-game weekend series will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Cougar Field.
