Cougar Baseball Team Defeats Southwest Texas State 11 Innings

HOUSTON -- University of Houston senior Sean Allen connected for a solo home run in the bottom of the eleventh inning to give the Cougar baseball team its second-straight win on Friday afternoon, a 10-9 victory over visiting Southwest Texas State. Allen's first home run of the season highlighted another standout hitting day as the Cougars slugged at least 14 hits for the third time in as many games, including a season-high three home runs.
Houston, now 5-7 overall, built an early 7-3 lead on the strength of two-run home runs by sophomore catcher Chris Snyder and junior leftfielder Josh Snook. The Bobcats however rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to make it 7-6 after rightfielder Coy Louder drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded and first baseman Mark Younk then singled in two more.
In the eighth the Cougars looked to have added an insurance run with an RBI single by freshman Gabe Lucas to make the score 8-6, but SWTX came back with five singles in the top of the ninth to tie the score 8-8. The Bobcats then took a 9-8 lead after Lance Williams tripled in a run to left-center field.
The Cougars answered with a run in the bottom of the frame after a leadoff double, a sacrifice, and pinch-hit RBI single by freshman Hyung Cho. Houston reliever Jaren Grein then retired Southwest Texas State 1-2-3 in the top of the eleventh, setting up Allen's eventual game-winning blast. The Bobcats, which had won three in a row entering the three-game weekend series, fell to 9-4. The teams continue action on Saturday at Cougar Field.
