Houston - The University of Houston baseball team dropped both ends of a double-header to No. 3 ranked LSU Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge. After falling 9-4 in the opener the Cougars were defeated in the nightcap by a score of 4-1.
With the team's fourth consecutive loss UH fell to 3-6 overall. LSU improved to 4-2. The teams will conclude the three-game weekend series at Alex Box Stadium on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
In the first game the Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead but a pair of big innings in the third and fourth gave the Tigers a 7-1 advantage. A damaging four-run outburst in the third should not have even happened but a fielding error kept a two-out LSU rally alive. Houston chipped away with single runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth, but UH could not get timely hitting and ended the contest against the country's No. 3 team having stranded 13 runners on base.
In the second game UH carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth on the strength of a solid starting pitching performance by freshman right-hander Gene Flores. Flores scattered three hits for the first 5.0 innings, but LSU opened the sixth with three-straight hits and ended the frame with three runs to take the lead. The Cougars posted only five hits but still had a number of opportunities with six walks issued by the LSU pitching staff. In a near replay of game one Houston couldn't convert on the opportunites and stranded another nine men on base.
