HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston senior outside hitter Jennifer Wittenburg earned another postseason honor Wednesday when she was named to the 2001 AVCA All-Midwest Region Team.
It marked the second consecutive year that the Houston native was named to the All-Region squad.
Wittenburg recently enjoyed one of the finest seasons ever posted by a Cougar volleyball player. In 2001, she established a new school single-season record with 646 kills and moved into third place on the all-time career chart with 1,406 kills.
She also tied the UH single-match record with 37 kills in back-to-back matches on consecutive nights against DePaul and Marquette.
In addition, she recorded 385 digs for the eighth-highest total in a single season and moved into first place all-time with 5.39 kills per game.
During the season, Wittenburg was named Conference USA Player of the Week three times and was recognized as the league's Most Valuable Player before the postseason tournament. She was the first Cougar to win the latter award outright in school history.
Wittenburg was joined on the team by Amy Almond (Morehead State), Michelle Collier (South Florida), Laura Dallenbach (Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Karis Day (Wright State), Mehgan Devine (Marquette), Alessandra Domingos (South Florida), Lesley Drury (Louisville), Colleen Hunter (Saint Louis), Kara Jakusz (DePaul), Sonja Percan (Louisville) and Bonita Wise (Cincinnati).
