Houston, Texas- The University of Houston men.s basketball team closed out the year 2001 in record-setting fashion in their 91-60 victory over Tennessee State Sunday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars set a new school record for the best field goal percentage in a game by making 35 of their 50 field goal attempts for 70 percent against the Tigers. The old record was 68.1 percent that was set on December 8, 1981 against Texas Lutheran.
This marks the fourth time in their last seven games that Houston has shot 60 percent or better from the field.
Senior guard Dominic Smith led a balanced Houston attack with 18 points and seven assists. Four other Cougars scored in double figures. George Williams finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Kevin Gaines added 13 points and tied Smith with a game-high seven assists. Marcus Oliver and Jeremee McGuire came off the bench to tally 12 points each and Patrick Okafor netted 11 points.
Louis Truscott scored six points and led Houston with seven rebounds.
Houston improves its record to 6-5 overall this season and begin Conference USA play at Saint Louis on January 5. The Cougars also travel to Tulane on January 8 before playing their next home game against Cincinnati on January 12 at 3:00 p.m.
