HOUSTON, Texas - After taking nearly a week off, the University of Houston volleyball returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday when the team plays host to East Carolina at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The match starts a busy weekend for the Cougars, who will also meet Charlotte in a 7 p.m. match Saturday.
The Cougars (8-8, 5-2) come into the match on the heels of a 3-0 win at TCU on Saturday. That win marked the third straight Conference USA win for the team and propelled Houston into a tie for third place with DePaul. In addition, UH reached the .500 mark overall for the first time since Sept. 23.
Against the Horned Frogs, senior outside hitter Jennifer Wittenburg blasted a match-high 21 kills and added to her Cougar legacy by recording the 1,100th kill of her career early in the first game.
The TCU match featured a balanced offensive attack from the Cougar attackers. Junior middle hitter Jenny Tanneberger, who leads the team with a .318 attack percentage, posted only two errors with 14 kills in 27 chances, and junior outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek finished with 13 kills and just two errors in 30 chances against the Horned Frogs.
As a team, the Cougars blasted away to a .331 hitting percentage, including a .441 mark in the third and final game.
East Carolina comes into the match after dropping a 3-0 decision to league rival South Florida on Saturday. In that match, no Pirate posted double digits in either kills or digs.
Amanda Rudolph leads the team with 161 kills and 202 digs, while Robyn Drewes is a close second with 143 kills.
The match will be the first time that the two teams have met on the volleyball court.
