2000 Volleyball Season Recap

RECAP: The University of New Mexico volleyball team finished the season with an overall record of 10-17 and a 5-9 mark in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos completed their 26th season of competition and carry an overall record of 386-360 (.517).
Head coach Laurel Brassey Iversen completed her 17th season at New Mexico with 500 career matches and a record of 290-307 (.486). Brassey Iversen's contract was not renewed and she will be replaced with former Utah State head coach Tom Peterson next season.
SEASON NOTES: The Lobos participated in five tournaments this season, hosting three and traveling to the Michigan All Sport Challenge and the 2000 MWC Women's Volleyball Championships.
To start the season UNM hosted the Comcast Lobo Invitational in early Sept. with then-ranked No. 3 Stanford capturing tournament honors. The Lobos split their four-game tournament series defeating Drake (3-1) and Portland State (3-0), and losing to Washington (1-3) and Stanford (0-3). New Mexico suffered a more significant loss with the injury to junior outside hitter Vanessa Shields who went down with a torn ACL during the second game of the Stanford match. Shields was lost for the season leaving a hole in the middle which the young squad struggled to fill. UNM was also without the services of senior outside hitter and team captain Micaela Conley for the tournament because of a shoulder injury. Freshman Amy Amundson was the lone Lobo named to the all-tournament team.
Tournament action continued at the Michigan All Sport Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Sept. 8-9. The Lobos went 0-3 in the tournament losing to the SEC's South Carolina (2-3), host Michigan (0-3) and the Mid-American's Northern Illinois (2-3). Conley started her season at the All Sport Challenge scoring her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs against South Carolina.
New Mexico hosted the Clubhouse Innvitational (Sept. 15-16) taking second place in their final home tournament before starting their conference schedule. The Lobos only loss was to Arizona State in the first round. UNM came back to defeat UC Riverside (3-0) and Oral Roberts (3-0). Lobos Conley and Amundson were named to the all-tournament team.
New Mexico started the MWC portion of the schedule with two wins against Air Force and UNLV at home. The Lobos finished tied with UNLV for fifth place in the regular season MWC race and was seeded fifth at the 2000 McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Women's Volleyball Championship held in Fort Collins, Colo.
In a tough five-game match, New Mexico lost to the San Diego State Aztecs by the scores of 15-12, 9-15, 15-12, 8-15, and 9-15 in the first round of the MWC Championships. Without the services of junior outside hitter Jessie Goffard, the Lobos battled tooth and nail for every ball finishing with 85 digs. Four Lobos notched double figure digs including Conley with 16 digs, sophomore middle Erika Sansoni, who tied a career-high 22, sophomore setter Kelly Griffin with 14 and sophomore Blaire Burns who finished with a career-high 19.
Scoring her 12th and league leading double-double of the season, Conley tallied 10 kills and 16 digs against SDSU. Griffin scored her ninth of the season with 45 assists and 14 digs. Freshman Lynzie Hayes had a great match against SDSU, this time hitting a team-match and career-high .370 (13k-3e-27ta). Freshman Amundson also stepped up her play by scoring 13 kills and hitting .250 for the match (13k-5e-32ta).
Playing as an outside hitter instead of her usual defensive specialist role, sophomore Blaire Burns made some spectacular plays to keep New Mexico in the match against the Aztecs. Scoring career highs in kills with nine, and in digs with 19, Burns was the Lobos spark many times during the two and a half hour match. Burns added three service aces (ties a career high), one block solo and one block assist to her totals.
TEAM / INDIVIDUAL STATS: For the season New Mexico totaled 1,281 kills, 1,428 digs and 204 total blocks. The Lobos finished second in the MWC (overall and conference stats) averaging 14.88 digs per game.
Individually for New Mexico senior Conley topped the conference averaging 3.11 digs per game (overall games) and junior Jessie Goffard led the conference only games averaging 3.25 digs per game. Sophomore setter Griffin led the MWC serving 0.40 aces per game.
