HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team, 12-3 overall and 5-0 in
Conference USA, was ranked as the No. 1 team in the NCAA Midwest Regional
coaches poll (October 5). The regional polls, which are taken every two
weeks beginning with the first week in October, are conducted in order to
assist the NCAA selection committee when at-large bids are awarded to the
National Championship Tournament in late November.
Houston was voted atop the first Midwest Region poll on a vote of head volleyball coaches from Conference USA, the Midwestern Collegiate, the Ohio Valley and Southwestern Athletic conferences. The Cougars, who have won eight-straight heading into road matches at UAB and Memphis this weekend, are followed in the poll by C-USA members Cincinnati, South Florida, Louisville and DePaul. UH has already defeated South Florida and will face each of the top four teams before the C-USA Tournament (Nov. 16-19).
