Trey Holtz joined University of Houston Football in March 2023. The 2024 season is his second with the program and first as Defensive Analyst after serving as Offensive Analyst with the Cougars in 2023.
Holtz comes to Houston after spending the 2022 season as Offensive Quality Control Coach at Charlotte. Prior to Charlotte, he spent two seasons (2020-21) at Louisiana Tech as Inside Receivers Coach.
In his first season at Louisiana Tech, Trey, the eldest son of head football coach Skip Holtz, coached Smoke Harris and Cee Jay Powell to earn all-Conference USA honorable mention honors. Harris led the team in receptions with 39 for 304 total yards and four touchdowns, while Powell registered 37 receptions for 271 yards. Trey helped Louisiana Tech register 2,166 total receiving yards during the season as Tech averaged 216.60 receiving yards per game.Â
Trey came to LA Tech after spending the past 2017-19 seasons at Ohio State working primarily with the Buckeyes tight ends and running backs.

In 2019, Trey was promoted to Ohio State’s offensive graduate assistant after serving as the assistant tight ends coach in 2018 and the assistant running backs coach in 2017.

In his three years on Ohio State’s offensive staff, the Buckeyes set numerous records while posting a combined record of 38-4.

In 2019, the Buckeyes led the NCAA in total offense (529.9 YPG), passing efficiency (180.51), scoring offense (46.9 PPG), first downs (397) and third-down conversion % (55.2%).

The 2018 squad set school and Big Ten records for total yards per game (535.6), passing yards (5,100) and passing touchdowns (51). The 2017 team averaged 506.0 yards per game and scored 50 or more points five times.

Holtz was part of back-to-back-to-back Big Ten championships along with Cotton Bowl and Rose Bowl victories.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Holtz was a five-year quarterback at the University of Texas (2012-16). He played in all 23 games during his junior and senior seasons of 2015 and 2016 as the team’s holder on field goals and extra points.

As a preferred walk-on, Holtz went on to earn a scholarship and was a five-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Holtz attended H.B. Plant High School in Tampa, Fla., and helped the Panthers win a state title as a senior.

Holtz earned a master’s degree from Ohio State’s sport management program in December of 2018. He received his bachelor’s degree from Texas in physical culture and sport.
