Path to In-Person Services

In-person services
1. Student-athletes are eligible to receive mental health services and wellness services.
2. Student-athletes can self-refer and set-up an appointment via a QR code distributed monthly via Teamworks.
3. Student-athlete’s academic advisor, team trainer, and/or coach can also make a referral electronically via a link distributed monthly via email. SAMHWS will follow up with student-athletes, via phone/text and email, 24 to 48 hours after receiving a referral.
4. Student-athletes may also choose to receive mental health services through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) or select community providers. Student-athletes can self-refer to CAPS or coordinate a visit with SAMHWS.
5. Student-athletes can also walk in and will be seen if a clinician is available.
Tele-mental health services
SAMHWS will provide telehealth services to UH student-athletes who have a permanent address in Texas or who are living in Texas over the summer. SAMHWS cannot provide telehealth services to UH student-athletes who are not in Texas at the time of summer service. Telehealth sessions will only be held via our HIPAA compliant Zoom account and student-athletes must complete a tele mental health consent form.
Process
Injured Athletes
UH student-athletes who have experienced a long-term time loss injury, as defined by the UH sports medicine staff, will be required to meet with a SAMHWS team member at some time between their injury and before they return to play. Team sports medicine staff, at their discretion, may refer athletes who are injured, but did not experience a long-term time loss injury, for counseling, wellness checks, case management, and/or advice on return to play.

Pathway When Teams Travel
If a student-athlete experiences a MHE while traveling for competition, then:
With the student-athlete’s consent, higher level of care recommendations will be made by collaboration between the Director of Mental Health, the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development/SWA, and the student-athlete. If higher levels of care decisions involve inpatient and/or outpatient decisions, the Director of Athletics, or the designee with the student athlete’s consent, will consult with the facility’s licensed mental health professional who is providing care to the student-athletes.- The team's coaches/staff should utilize the home school’s in-house mental health provider.
- If the home school does not have an in-house provider and the student-athlete is experiencing an MHE, then the team’s coaches/staff should call 911 and arrange transport to the nearest 24-hour inpatient facility near the competition site.
- If the student-athlete has executed the SAMHWS Informed Consent, once the student-athlete is safe, then the coaches/staff should contact the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development/SWA or their designee and the Director of Mental Health.
