HOUSTON (Nov. 7) - The University of Houston women's volleyball team won its sixth match in a row with its fourth-straight three-games-to-none sweep Sunday afternoon in Hofheinz Pavilion. With a 15-4, 15-11, 15-10 Conference USA win over National Division rival Southern Miss, the Cougars improved their overall record to 19-6 on the year and a C-USA leading 13-1 in league play.
Houston took advantage of Southern Miss miscues to claim game one 15-4, but the Golden Eagles settled down and jumped out to an 8-1 adavntage to open game two. The Cougars however regrouped to go on a 14-3 run and claim the contest 15-11. Houston then battled for a 15-10 win in game three to complete the team's eighth three-game sweep of the season. Each of UH's last four victories in a current six-match win streak have all been by a score of three games to none.
The Cougars were paced by senior middle blocker Jillian King, who led all players with 18 kills while posting a .294 hitting percentage, 11 defensive digs and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Kristin Guidish added 11 kills and 10 digs on the Cougars' annual Senior Day. The duo and senior teammate Jessica Arnold were all honored by the University prior to the match.
The Golden Eagles were led by outside hitter Lindsay Westendorf's 11 kills and 13 digs. Southern Miss fell to 12-16 overall and 3-11 in C-USA action.
Having already clinched C-USA's National Division crown, Houston will next try and secure the No. 1 seed in the league's post-season tournament next weekend. The Cougars will play their final two C-USA matches of the regular season on road at Cincinnati and Louisville on Friday and Sunday, November 12 and 14th, respectively. Cincinnati and Louisville are the top two teams in the American Division of Conference USA.
