BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The University of Houston women's volleyball team coasted to a three games to none sweep of Conference USA rival UAB Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama. With a 15-3, 15-11, 15-7 win, the Cougars clinched the C-USA National Division title and have officially earned a bye in the first round of the league's championship tournament later in November.
Houston jumped out to a 15-3 win in game one by out-hitting the Blazers .419 to .081. The Cougars then held off a pair of UAB rallies to close out the team's fifth 3-0 sweep of the season. Senior outside hitter Kristin Guidish led UH with eight kills and nine defensive digs and a pair of blocks. Three other Cougars, Bobbi Stewart, Jillian King and Michelle Frazier all posted six kills in a match that was all Houston.
The Cougars improved to 16-6 on the year and a C-USA leading 11-1 in league play. Even with four C-USA matches remaining in the regular season, UH can not be caught in the National Division standings. It is the first time for the Cougars to clinch a division championship as a member of Conference USA.
The Cougars will be back in Houston for its next match, but the contest on Wednesday, November 3, will be on the road. UH will meet crosstown rival Rice in the annual battle for the city championship at the Owls Autry Court. First serve with Rice will be at 7:30 p.m.
