HOUSTON (Oct. 10) - On the way to a convincing 3-0 sweep of Conference USA divisional rival Memphis Sunday afternoon in Hofheinz Pavilion the Cougars not only remained perfect in league action at 7-0, the team notched a career milestone for UH head coach Bill Walton.
With the 15-2, 15-3, 15-7 win over the Tigers Walton recorded his 500th career victory in this, his 19th season as a full-time head coach. Walton has been at Houston for 14 of the 19 seasons and in winning the team's ninth-straight match of the year to improve to 12-5, his current Cougar squad looked as sharp as it has all season.
Houston held Memphis to just 12 points for the entire match and UH out-hit the Tigers .309 to -.066 in the contest. Junior Stephanie Heiskell paced the Cougars, now 12-5 on the year and 7-0 in C-USA. The standout from Katy Taylor High School spiked 12 kills and hit for a .500 percentage. Junior Michelle Frazier meanwhile hit for a .600 percentage with five block assists in a match that quickly went all Houston's way.
Memphis fell to 7-13 on the season and 1-6 against the league. The Tigers were led by Lindsay Bax' four kills.
The Cougars will next be in action with another C-USA contest on Friday, October 15. Houston will take on Marquette on the road in Milwaukee as Walton tries for win No. 501. The team will be back in Hofheinz to face DePaul on Sunday, October 17.
